The war in Ukraine and its impact on climate change

How does Russia's war in Ukraine affect climate change in Sweden and within the EU? The Mistra Carbon Exit research programme has studied this in a new report that focuses on the energy, critical minerals and climate policy.

The report Impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the planned green transformation in Europe is written by Lars Zetterberg, programme manager for Mistra Carbon Exit, together with Filip Johnsson, deputy programme manager for Mistra Carbon Exit and programme manager for Mistra Electrification, and Milan Elkerbout, at the Brussels-based think tank CEPS, Center for European Policy Studies .

The researchers propose a series of measures to strengthen climate policy by increasing the security of important supply chains and eliminating dependence on Russian gas.

“Europe's dependency on fossil goods and commodities creates significant challenges”, says Lars Zetterberg, researcher at IVL the Swedish Environmental Research Institute.

Regarding the energy transition, the report recommends a faster expansion of renewable electricity in the form of solar and wind.

"The technology is known, the costs to implement it are relatively low - but development is too slow”, says Lars Zetterberg.
