"Misconceptions about the climate impact of biofuels drive the debate"

A one-sided focus on emissions from exhaust pipes and chimneys can lead to incorrect conclusions. So say six researchers in forestry, environment and climate.

Daniel Johansson and Johannes Morfeldt, researchers at Chalmers and within Mistra Carbon Exit, are two of the six researchers who recently published an opinion piece in Altinget. Göran Berndes and Julia Hansson, Chalmers, Mattias Lundblad and Johan Stendah, SLU are other authors.

The article aims to show why a single-minded focus on tailpipe and stack emissions can lead to incorrect conclusions about how our climate impact changes when biofuels replace fossil fuels.

They argue that current calculation models mean that bioenergy emissions are double-counted, which gives an inaccurate picture of greenhouse gas emissions in Sweden.
